4 Excellent Ideas To Have A Traditional Kitchen

[ No Comments ] Posted on 11.20.09 under Food And Drink

I totally agree – an expensive kitchen is a woman’s dream. It is the best place in the home and is a place where one can create culinary delights. But so many woman make the mistake in choosing a modern kitchen over a traditional kitchen. Today’s minimalistic styles are nice, but they are uninviting and they are the reason why family members run off to the lounge rather than spending time in the kitchen with you.

To remedy this, lets have a look at four ways for you to get them back into the kitchen and communicating again:

Idea One: Accessories play a huge role in creating a country look kitchen. You need to think of things like old storage tins, wicker baskets, wooden bowls and fresh flowers. Today you can have exquisitely made blinds to accentuate your windows. Also place a few dried vegetables like garlic or tomatoes neatly strung around the kitchen. You need to think of earthly objects which will give your kitchen a wholesome healthy look.

Idea Two: Wood always makes a room look inviting, cozy and homely. If you are planning a completely new kitchen then by all means opt for a robust oak finish. This wood is durable and always looks elegant no matter how old. If you want to change the look here and there, then have your cabinet doors replaced with a good oak wood. It will instantly change your kitchen into an expensive looking one, but at half the price of a complete cabinet replacement.

Idea Three: Lighting can also play a pivotal role in setting the stage for a country kitchen. Have small recess lights placed under your cabinets to highlight your workspace. Or have tiny lights fitted into your cabinets if they have glass doors. This will create soft tones and can accentuate a collectors piece or just something that is dear to you. Don’t be afraid to play with pastel colored light bulbs, a soft lime or yellow and even a soft pink can instantly change your kitchen into a beautiful work of art.

Idea Four: Flooring will make or break your kitchen. It is the first thing our eye catches and will instantly make you like the kitchen or dislike it. Here you need to be really daring by using stone for your flooring needs. Slate makes a wonderful floor cover that is easy to clean and has marvelous textures and colors to choose from. A well known secret these days is to extend a piece of your slate flooring up on the wall, behind your stove and hob. This really makes a kitchen come alive and gives it a focal point.

You can have more of your family by creating a traditional kitchen. Place a personal object of each family member in your kitchen as well. These objects will always spark new conversational topics and before you know it, you have them talking!

Lobsters in History

[ No Comments ] Posted on 04.03.09 under Food And Drink

Close your eyes, and picture that large, mouth-watering lobster waiting on your plate for you to crack open and enjoy. You’d be hard-pressed to think of anything that sounds better. However, don’t rush out for a live lobster dinner just yet. Wouldn’t it be fun to learn a little bit about the critter you’re craving before you indulge?

Early Native Americans were a funny bunch. They had super-easy access to lobsters, but they refused to eat them. Instead, they used them to fertilize their farm fields or as fish bait. How sad is that?

The early European settlers which graced our shores didn’t eat lobster meat, either. They’d pick them up by hand to use as fertilizer or to feed to the lowest creatures of their society, slaves, indentured servants, children, and the poor. After years of this practice, indentured servants begin to protest the constant lobster diet. In fact, they went so far as having it written into their contracts that they would never have to eat lobster more than three times a week.

Up until the early 19th century, people could get all the lobsters they needed by snagging them from tide pools. They had no need for technological advances in the harvesting of live lobsters. The first lobster traps didn’t come on the scene until the 1850s. The reason harvesters needed traps is because they had become able to sell their lobsters to canneries. No one ate the lobsters fresh, and the canned version was so tasteless that few people ate them canned, either.

When our transportation system developed sufficiently to transport live lobsters, the meat finally caught on with the public. They were shipped to the finest restaurants in America’s largest cities where only the well-to-do were able to afford to eat them.

If you’re like I am, you may feel a little squeamish about seeing your dinner lying serene and green in a tank one minute and bright-red and cooked on your plate the next. This feeling, too, dates back to the beginning of lobster-eating. Lobster experts swear, however, that it’s the only way to have fresh lobster.

My great-grandmother was raised during the Victorian period of the late 19th century. During her formative years, girls were sheltered from the sordid parts of life. She wouldn’t have been able to imagine something as terrible as putting a live animal into boiling water. In her later years, she still couldn’t bring herself to eat the seafood that was all the rage with everyone else. Her Victorian sensibilities made the thought of seafood repugnant to her.

It’s hard to believe that our ancestors didn’t like the way lobsters tasted. Just think of all the good food that was wasted as fertilizer. Their palates were just very different from ours. As our society developed more sophisticated tastes, lobsters finally became the delicacies they were always destined to be.

Looking For Convenience? Boneless Chicken Helps

[ No Comments ] Posted on 03.28.09 under Food And Drink

Many of us are finding that our lives are getting more and more busy all the time. If we do not pay attention, it is not long before we find ourselves hitting the drive thru too often or heating up yet another TV dinner. After all, if you have had a long day and time is short, you might have trouble finding the energy to cook.

Unfortunately, convenience eating – restaurants and processed foods – can lead to gaining weight, unhealthy, sluggish feelings, and many other unfortunate side effects. It does not set a good example for our families either. A good, home cooked meal should be an important part of most families’ days.

Thankfully, it is possible to cook good, healthy meals without a lot of extra work. Just do a little planning, some preparation when you have extra time, and use ingredients like boneless chicken that will cut down on the effort you need to spend cooking. Home cooked meals can be simple and easy if you know what you are doing. Instead of cooking, cleaning, and dealing with the mess of a whole chicken or bone in parts, you can use boneless chicken to begin preparing your meal right away!

Boneless Chicken Cooking Tips

It is a good idea to know what kind of chicken you prefer cooking with. Boneless chicken comes in fresh and frozen types, and each has its own advantages. Fresh chicken has to be used quickly, and gives you more limited options. Packaged frozen chicken can be purchased in bulk and does not need to be used as quickly. However, thawing it takes some advance planning, possibly even knowing what you want to make the night before.

Remember that boneless chicken cooks more quickly than traditional bone-in pieces, and in many cases, it is thinner than the chicken you may be used to using. That means that cooking times may need to be adjusted if you want to avoid overcooking your meat.

Recipe Ideas for Boneless Chicken

This is a convenience type of meat that works well in almost anything, from salads to fajitas, and even grilled and stirred into Italian dishes.

Stir fried or braised, boneless chicken does very well in nearly all-Asian dishes. If you have a chicken Marsala Italian recipes you love, but that take too much work, think about using this chicken there. Boneless chicken also does well in curries, or it can be used in a traditional chicken soup with canned broth and frozen vegetables. That is one way to make old-fashioned home cooked meals quickly!

There are so many options when you work with boneless chicken. This convenient food lets you enjoy real, healthy home cooking and skip the takeout, without having to interrupt your already busy day. If you have been looking for an alternative to convenience eating, ingredients like this may be the solution you have been waiting for.

Clean and Maintain your Espresso Coffee Machine

[ No Comments ] Posted on 02.09.09 under Food And Drink

For most people, morning without sipping that delicious aromatic coffee wont be complete, not that coffee consumption has become mandatory but theres something about the beverage that people, throughout the history, have come to patronize. But as with everything in our reach, there should always be an accompanying responsibility and when it comes to our love with coffee, there comes the cleaning of the machine that makes every cupful a delightful affair.

I know that most people are sometimes too busy to take notice that the screen has gone black than usual but set a higher standard for yourself; if you want to continually avail that espresso confection without the change in odor and taste, clean that Espresso Coffee Machine now.

First, filter the water or use some bottled water. If the Coffee Machine has water filter features, descale it at least once a week. During use, remove the grounds and make it a habit to rinse the portafilter immediately after every use. Clean the portafilter, screen heads, and basket thoroughly once a day. There is a highly recommended cleaning solution called Purro Caff (if unavailable, you can use tri-sodium phosphate as alternative).

Use the backflush method in cleaning the group head and replace the usual filter-basket with a blind filter (one without holes). Run the machine with plain water as when pulling a 15-20 seconds shot and because the filter has no holes, when you stop running the machine, the pressurized water will flush back through the group screen and group solenoid. This helps to remove the grounds and oil accumulations inside the group head. Use some Purro Caff (or tri-sodium phosphate) inside the blind filter. Repeat the ‘brewing’ several times, with 20-second pauses, to rinse properly.

Soaking the Portafilters and the screens in hot water with an ordinary detergent will result to a thorough clean. In order to clean the steam wand, use warm water, detergent and a non-abrasive cloth. Replacing the shower screen with one periodically will prevent the build-up of coffee oils that sometimes cause those odd tastes in the mixtures. And a rule of the thumb; remember to never use the back flush method on Manual Espresso Machines for it can cause damage to some internal parts.
